In the heart of Gem Sub-county and across Siaya County, our adolescents and youth face what we call the “Triple Threat” \u2013 a dangerous combination of teenage pregnancies, new HIV infections, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). These challenges do not exist in isolation; they feed into each other, creating cycles of poverty, poor health, and lost opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the Center for Adolescent Girls & Youth Health Program (CAGHYP), we refuse to accept this as the status quo. Since our establishment in 2023, we have been working tirelessly to dismantle these threats, one young life at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers tell a sobering story. Across Siaya County, too many adolescent girls are forced to abandon their education due to unplanned pregnancies. Too many young people are contracting HIV because they lack accurate information and access to prevention services. And too many \u2013 both girls and boys \u2013 suffer in silence after experiencing gender-based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But behind every statistic is a face, a dream, and a future that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At CAGHYP, we understand that creating awareness is just the first step. Real change requires a comprehensive strategy that reaches young people wherever they are \u2013 in schools, in their communities, and in their moments of greatest need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our school programs are designed to reach adolescents at a critical stage in their development. Through age-based macro sessions, we use approved mentorship manuals and interactive tools \u2013 videos, pictures, and role plays \u2013 to make sexual and reproductive health education engaging and memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“When we use role plays, the students remember the message long after the session ends,” says one of our trained facilitators. “They see themselves in the scenarios, and it helps them make better decisions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We also address practical barriers to education. Through our provision of dignity packs for girls and men wear for vulnerable boys, we ensure that learners can attend school with confidence and dignity, regardless of their family’s economic situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our teams work closely with schools to identify suspected new pregnancy cases early. When we identify a girl who may be pregnant, we offer immediate referrals to the nearest health facility for confirmation and enrollment in antenatal care. This early action protects both the mother and the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the school gate, we create safe spaces where teenagers can gather, learn, and support each other. These community-based micro-sessions target teenage mothers, out-of-school youth, and adolescents who may not be reached through formal education channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In these safe spaces, we discuss:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Prevention mechanisms against the Triple Threat<\/p>\n\n\n\n Referral pathways for health and support services<\/p>\n\n\n\n Financial literacy and management, including table banking<\/p>\n\n\n\n Parenting skills for young mothers and fathers<\/p>\n\n\n\n We also recognize that parents and guardians need support too. Our support groups for guardians of affected teenagers provide psychosocial support and mentorship on parenting skills, strengthening the entire support system around each young person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n For Those Affected: Compassionate Support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For adolescents and youth already affected by HIV, we offer psychosocial micro-sessions tailored to their needs. Newly diagnosed young people receive counseling that helps them process their status and learn to live positively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Young mothers \u2013 including those living with HIV \u2013 receive coaching and mentorship that goes beyond health. We work on the “return to school” formula in collaboration with key stakeholders, ensuring that pregnancy does not mean the end of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Story of Hope: Akinyi’s Journey<\/p>\n\n\n\n Names changed to protect privacy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Akinyi was 16 years old when she discovered she was pregnant. Like many girls in her situation, she felt her world collapsing. She stopped attending school, withdrew from her friends, and saw her dreams of becoming a teacher slipping away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Through our program, Akinyi was connected to antenatal care at a local health facility. She joined a support group of other young mothers where she received counseling and learned about parenting. Most importantly, she learned about the “return to school” guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I didn’t know I could go back to school after having a baby,” Akinyi shares. “CAGHYP showed me that my life wasn’t over. They helped me talk to my parents and my school, and they even connected me with a mentor who had been through the same thing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, Akinyi is back in school, and her mother cares for the baby during class hours. She has become a peer educator in her community, using her experience to help other girls avoid the same challenges or seek help early if they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I want to be a teacher even more now,”\u00a0she says with determination.\u00a0“I want to show other girls that having a baby doesn’t mean your dreams have to die.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Triple Threat is formidable, but together, we are stronger.
